About Stephen

Stephen Jeffreys is one of Britain’s leading playwrights. He is the author of more than twenty professionally produced plays including The Libertine and I Just Stopped By To See The Man (Royal Court and Steppenwolf, Chicago); Valued Friends and A Going Concern (Hampstead); and A Jovial Crew (RSC) featuring such actors as John Malkovich, Jane Horrocks, Martin Clunes, Emily Watson and Sophie Okonedo.

2005 saw the release of the film version of The Libertine starring Johnny Depp for which Stephen wrote the screenplay and the premiere of his new play Lost Land starring John Malkovich at Steppenwolf.

For eleven years he occupied the key position of Literary Associate at the Royal Court, helping directors Max Stafford-Clark, Stephen Daldry and Ian Rickson to form the artistic policy of Europe’s leading new writing theatre. Most recently, he was seen teaching playwrights on the successful Channel 4 fly-on-the-wall documentary The Play’s The Thing.

Stephen is an experienced teacher, communicating his unique insights into the art of writing for the theatre all over the world. He is currently writing a book Playwriting for Nick Hern Books.
